The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a $15,000 reward in Perez’ case on Feb. 23. The other half was raised by Perez’ family and member of her community, said the West Covina Police Department, which along with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the case.
A gunman driving near Amar Road and Azusa Avenue shot into Perez’ car, sending her to the hospital where she later died, police said.
A 29-year-old working her way toward becoming a registered nurse, Perez, of West Covina, was also a member of Sacred Heart Church in West Covina and an active volunteer at St. Thomas More Catholic School in Alhambra.
Her death prompted heightened safety concerns among city officials in West Covina and surrounding cities, such as La Puente as gun violence increased in the area, along with other cities across the United States throughout the coronavirus pandemic.
A couple weeks after Perez’ death, stray bullets during a drive-by shooting in La Puente wounded a 5-year-old boy. In late February, a man died in a shooting at a Bassett motel. Days later in La Puente, 35-year-old Maruicio Valdez was shot to death in a backyard. A shooting in West Valinda earlier this week left two men wounded. On Friday, a man in his early 20s died in a hospital after he was shot along a Bassett street.
Residents in this portion of the San Gabriel Valley view Perez’ killing as a part of the recent wave of gun violence.
“We need to do our best to take back our streets and keep the community safe because it’s no longer that,” said Dominique Deharo, Perez’ cousin, at a vigil in January following the shooting.
The region, primarily La Puente, the City of Industry, and surrounding unincorporated county areas, has experienced generational waves of gun violence, the last of which struck the community throughout 2019 when members of local gangs entered into a bloody clash.
Throughout the summer of 2019, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies increased patrols throughout the area.
Sheriff’s officials said in early 2020 they planned to aggressively “move in” on the involved gangs during a meeting to address the shootings.
However, investigators acknowledged investigating and prosecuting gang-related shootings in the La Puente and surrounding communities is difficult due to fear of retaliation from gangs, rendering many residents into silence.
